Sectors & Activities/Education Institutions

Universities and colleges are at the forefront of the climate change agenda, leading the search for scientific solutions through their research function and delivering training on the skills needed to deliver an environmentally sound economy. As major users of energy, institutions are also exposed to volatile energy prices, and need to find ways, not only of improving energy efficiency, but also of reducing their reliance on conventional sources of energy.

To take advantage of the competitive edge that research into climate change can undoubtedly bring, institutions will want to ensure that they can access the right funding, including European 7th Framework funding, and that they can exploit the outcomes of research, through licensing and spin-outs. Other sources of funding will be needed to capitalise on commercially viable research outputs. For some institutions, merger with or acquisition of research institutes might be a strategic necessity. On the training side, institutions may want to consider collaborative delivery of skills training, or joint ventures. As major users of energy whose influence in the locality allows them to lead by example, institutions will want to consider more efficient ways of procuring their energy needs, for example by using surplus land to site renewables, or to develop a sustainable generating facility.

Martineau's nationally recognised education expertise, our excellent track record in energy, funds and private client work, as well as our strong links with industry and research councils mean that we are uniquely positioned to advise institutions on all aspects of their engagement with the sustainable agenda. We promise far more than simply satisfying a specific legal services requirement. Our commitment to the sustainability agenda means we have the drive and enthusiasm to help build connections between our landowner, industrial and institutional clients that can help shape local climate change strategies.

Our experience in advising educational institutions in this area includes:

  • technology transfer and IPR
  • collaborations and joint ventures
  • seed capital funds and venture capital
  • energy purchasing
  • carbon trading
  • planning and consents for on-site renewables
  • construction, operation and maintenance contracts
  • environmental permitting and compliance strategies.
